Liberty Watson (Watson x Watson)

Over Mercedes Benz Fashion week we caught up with Liberty Watson, one half of the talented duo behind Sydney-based label Watson x Watson. Founded with her sister, Somer Watson, the label came back stronger than ever this season.

SA: What has inspired your collection for this season?

Liberty: We’ve been inspired by those unexpected nights out that turn into the best nights of your life! We’re both suffering serious disco fever! Combined with a few travel influences, Liberty in Holland and Somer in Mayanmar, we’ve combined blue and white cottage inspired prints, modern day clogs and different textures, all with an amazing statement earring from our collaboration with Fiel Sol.

SA: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Liberty: We draw our inspiration from the items that are missing in our wardrobes. Those pieces you want, yet can’t seem to find anywhere. We both have busy lives, we are well travelled and need our wardrobes to have versatility and quality pieces that will transfer from day to night – items that have a timesless-ness about them.

SA: How did Watson x Watson first come about?

Liberty: I was in Positano with a Campari in hand, I called Somer when she was in London and said ‘are you in?’. She didn’t even have to ask what I was talking about. We figured we could make our passion for high quality fashion a career and here we are four years later, doing our 4th runway show and we know the brand’s DNA better than ever.

SA: What aesthetics do you prefer to work with and where do you source them?

Liberty: We are so proud to make our product here in Australia locally – sometimes only 10kms up the road – something we can keep a very close eye on quality-wise.

SA: What should we expect to see for this collection?

Liberty: Expect a party and everyday luxury.

SA: Your favourite way to unwind?

Liberty: A glass of Laurent Perrier with my husband – we live at North Bondi, so finding a patch of grass to drink, eat and laugh is bliss. I also love to throw on my Nike’s and work out – it’s like hitting the refresh button for me. Somer will indulge in yoga class with her beautiful friend and awesome teacher Pursia Juliette. If she had a full afternoon off, then she’ll stress herself out by cooking for as many people that can fit into her lounge room.

SA: How do you balance your busy schedule?

Liberty: We don’t! There’s never enough time between partners, friends and incredible family – my sleep is always shorter than it should be!

SA: Best place to holiday for you is?

Liberty: Europe – I love to skip around from St Tropez to Italy to Holland and get my sunshine during the Australian winter.

SA: Favorite quote of yours?

Liberty: “No-one can reject love” – if someone looks like they’re having a bad day, I just pour it on them. I seem to have an endless supply!

SA: Most iconic style figure for you would be?

Liberty: Voluptuous, sexy women inspire me – fashion can be simple. I’m still fascinated by women like Marilyn Monroe or Bridgette Bardot – sometimes you see past their spectacular looks and get a sense of what their personalities were really like.
